The release of Star Wars Episode VIII has been delayed, according to official sources. The film had previously been announced as being due in May, but new announcements peg the follow up to The Force Awakens as another winter release, now set for 15 December 2017.
No reason or comment has been given for the shift of release date, although rumours blame script problems like those that have reportedly beset Rogue One and The Force Awakens before it.
Incidentally Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is due for release in May 2017, so Disney executives may have been keen to avoid the two future blockbusters diluting each other's box office take. Meanwhile, the next Pirates of the Caribbean film has been shuffled into Episode VIII's original mid-May slot, and Marvel's Spider-Man reboot has taken PotC's old place in July.
Star Wars Episode VIII is currently still in the preproduction stage with filming due to commence next month, Rian Johnson is directing, with Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman producing.
