Star Wars: The Last Jedi has officially hit theatres around the world, and the critics reviews have been overwhelmingly positive about Rian Johnson's new direction for the Star Wars saga.
Rotten Tomatoes currently has a critics score of 93% - certified fresh - but the general public has been much more divided, with only 56% being satisfied by The Last Jedi. Metacritic is currently scoring The Last Jedi with a very positive 86.
Empire gave The Last Jedi four stars, saying that the film "delivers everything you want from a Star Wars movie" and comments on the surprising ways it delivers thrills and feels.
Rolling Stone branded it "The Empire Strikes Back for the next generation". Their 3.5 star review commented on the crowded plot, but applauded the performances of Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher.
"There are fan-pleasing moments, for sure, but nothing is included without a purpose", said IGN as they awarded a 9.7/10 rating. They also pointed out that too many subplots weighed the film down in the middle but called it "quintessentially Star Wars".
