I mean that in RS3 you could give voice command to NPC's. In SOCOM it was only other human players.

Starlight Express-

First of all, I'm very biased, because I'm a big fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber. I like musicals in general, I appreciate 'Cats,' and I like rock'n'roll. If you don't fit all the criteria above, this show is not for you. It's a romance of train cars, who are played by people on roller skates. It has bright lights, loud music, and a rap and breakdance. Most of the audience were old folks who kept complaining that the they didn't like the show. But if you can handle a complicated storyline and enjoy musicals, I definitely recommend this show. The actors are unbelievable: they skate, dance in skates, sing, and act all at once. The costumes are fabulous, and the music is phenomenal. Overall, it's great, but meant for only those who have a very particular mix of traits.

Oscars tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My final Oscar analysis:

$ = Will win

* = Should win

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

*Johnny Depp - PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

Ben Kingsley - HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG

Jude Law - COLD MOUNTAIN

*Bill Murray - LOST IN TRANSLATION

$Sean Penn - MYSTIC RIVER

Johnny and Bill gave the two best performances of the year. Period. Bill and Sean are the frontrunners. It will either go to one or the other. If they split, the Oscar will go to Depp (he must win someday!) I watched LIT again yesterday. That reminded me how damn good Bill Murray was. Johnny has the more difficult role, so I respect them equally.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Alec Baldwin - THE COOLER

Benicio Del Toro - 21 GRAMS

Djimon Hounsou - IN AMERICA

*$Tim Robbins - MYSTIC RIVER

Ken Watanabe - THE LAST SAMURAI

I haven't seen The Cooler or 21 Grams, but Tim Robbins gave the best performance in Mystic. I'd vote for Sean Astin, but you must pick from what's available. Tim usually plays the likeable guy, but here, he made my hair curl.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

Keisha Castle-Hughes - WHALE RIDER

*Diane Keaton - SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE

Samantha Morton - IN AMERICA

$Charlize Theron - MONSTER

Naomi Watts - 21 GRAMS

Considering I've only seen Whale Rider, In America and SGG, I have to say that Diane should win. Charlize is the clear frontrunner here and the Academy will award her for the same reason they awarded Hilary Sw*** in 1999

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Shohreh Aghdashloo - HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG

Patricia Clarkson - PIECES OF APRIL

Marcia Gay Harden - MYSTIC RIVER

*Holly Hunter - THIRTEEN

$Ren?e Zellweger - COLD MOUNTAIN

Holly's already won before, but she was excellent in Thirteen. I feel bad for all parents of girls like that, and she made my sympathy deeper. Renee has been nominated for the past 3 years, she is the clear frontrunner. However, Cold Mountain is losing all its momentum. Shohreh Aghdashloo is gaining a lot of momentum and she could pull an upset. Patricia Clarkson will eventually win an Oscar, but not this year.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

BROTHER BEAR

*$FINDING NEMO

THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE

Brother Bear sucked. The Triplets of Belleville is a little seen French film that got critical raves, but Finding Nemo is the best film released last year besides ROTK. I don't see any reason why it could lose, or how.

ART DIRECTION

GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING

THE LAST SAMURAI

*$THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

SEABISCUIT

I'll just go with the favorite here. Girl With a Pearl Earring may have an advantage because it actually is about art.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

CITY OF GOD

COLD MOUNTAIN

GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING

$MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

*SEABISCUIT

Seabiscuit, while an average, overrated film, did have great Cinematography. MAC, which has the most noms of any of the films here, will win unless it pulls a Gangs of New York. However, I have a feeling that City of God will win something! It's either going to be here, or Editing.

COSTUME DESIGN

*GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING

THE LAST SAMURAI

$THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

SEABISCUIT

I've only seen previews of the costumes in Pearl Earring, but they look pretty good.

DIRECTING

CITY OF GOD

*$THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

LOST IN TRANSLATION

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

MYSTIC RIVER

I've seen all these films except for City of God, and I still think that ROTK is the best. There is virtually no way that PJ will lose. People who don't vote for PJ will split the votes.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

BALSEROS

$CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS

THE FOG OF WAR

MY ARCHITECT

THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND

I haven't seen any, but its either going to be Fog of War, or Capturing the Friedmans, I'll guess Friedmans.

DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT

ASYLUM

$CHERNOBYL HEART

FERRY TALES

Wild guess here.

FILM EDITING

CITY OF GOD

COLD MOUNTAIN

$THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

*MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

SEABISCUIT

ROTK's editing wasn't good as some of the others here. I'll vote for my other fave, MAC.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

$THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS

EVIL

THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI

TWIN SISTERS

?ELARY

I haven't seen any, but The Barbarian Invasions is the only one I've heard of. The screenplay nod doesn't hurt either.

MAKEUP

*$THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

Either ROTK did a great job with the makeup. Unless, of course, the extras who played Orcs actually looked like that. POTC can win, too. I mean, really, who didn't love Depp in that eyeliner?

MUSIC (SCORE)

BIG FISH

COLD MOUNTAIN

FINDING NEMO

HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG

$*THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

ROTK should pick up this Oscar. I think it has one of the best film scores ever. Maybe it won't, though. How "original" is it anyway.

MUSIC (SONG)

"Belleville Rendez-vous" - THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE

$"Into the West" - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

*"A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" - A MIGHTY WIND

"Scarlet Tide" - COLD MOUNTAIN

"You Will Be My Ain True Love" - COLD MOUNTAIN

The two Cold Mountain songs will split, leaving it open for Into the West to pick up the trophy. A Mighty Wind should win though. I'd give anything to a Christopher Guest film.

BEST PICTURE

*$THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

LOST IN TRANSLATION

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

MYSTIC RIVER

SEABISCUIT

I loved all the nominees (except Seabiscuit). ROTK, however, is my favorite film released all year, and one of my favorites of all time. Now that it's the 6th highest grossing film of all time, the buzz should just keep increasing. Mystic River should get votes from the Acting branch.

SHORT FILM (ANIMATED)

*$BOUNDIN'

DESTINO

GONE NUTTY

HARVIE KRUMPET

NIBBLES

I found a website with all of these. I saw all of them, and Boundin', the Pixar entry, should and will win.

SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION)

DIE ROTE JACKE (The Red Jacket)

MOST (The Bridge)

SQUASH

(A) TORZIJA ([A] Torsion)

$TWO SOLDIERS

Haven't seen any, but Two Soldiers is the All American entry.

SOUND EDITING

*FINDING NEMO

$MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

I'm guessing MAC will win, but I'm rooting for Nemo.

SOUND MIXING

THE LAST SAMURAI

*$THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

SEABISCUIT

ROTK truly sounded great. I have no idea what the difference between this and Sound Editing is, but I guess it's the number of nomnations and ROTK isn't in the other one. When in doubt, vote ROTK!

VISUAL EFFECTS

*$THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

One word: Gollum. How about another: Shelob. Another: Pelennor. A few more: The Army of the Dead. One last word: Mumakil. ROTK should, and will, win

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)

*AMERICAN SPLENDOR

CITY OF GOD

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

$MYSTIC RIVER

SEABISCUIT

American Splendor just got the WGA. That gives it a slight lead. American Splendor also was a great film, and had the best Screenplay of them all. ROTK had a good screenplay, but it was overshadowed by Mystic River. This is the only major award that Seabiscuit has a shot at winning, so look for a possible upset by it. Mystic River will wind up winning.

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)

THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS

DIRTY PRETTY THINGS

*FINDING NEMO

IN AMERICA

*$LOST IN TRANSLATION

I love the writing in Nemo and LIT equally. LIT should win. I possibly prefer Nemo because the most powerful line in LIT wasn't heard by the audience. Nemo is the, IMO, better film, but LIT has great writing and will wind up winning, unless In America pulls an upset. In America gives the Academy an oppurtunity to honor a father and two daughters, which may give it an advantage.

It's not on any more :( at least, not in London, and they've finished touring Britain. I saw it twice with my drama group, years ago, first musical i saw on stage. Absolutely amazing. It's my cousins favourite musical as well, and she's only six.

I especially loved the second time I saw it: they gave us a tour and took us to the control room and told us "this is where we sort things out if they go wrong, but that never happens, so it doesn't get used a lot."

Hands up if you can guess what happened next?

So wrong it was hilarious. They have these huge folding screens at each side of the hall so you can watch the 'trains' when they're skating around the audience on the track. These screens are operated hydraulically. When one failed to open no one batted an eyelid. When the trains went flying across the track, and when none of tehm could get up, it all got a bit odd. You suddenly get this poor guy clinging desperately to the raling shouting "we can't get up!" The hydraluic system had leaked oil all over the track. Even after they cleared it up things kept going wrong, but it's just that image of all these scuppered skaters floundering around.

Oh, on that note: favourite musical is My Fair Lady. Way better on stage than on film. Or at least, the version in London is. I ended up learning most of the words to "I could have danced all night" by accident, since we were doing Pygmalon in Eng Lit and saw the show once in London, once as a school production and twice on video.

Anyway, London show: Grade A

Audrey Hepburn version: B-

School version: B+

Rushmore: From the writer/directors of The Royal Tenenbaums, comes a movie even better than Royal: Rushmore. Rushmore is a hilarious movie about a club-obsessed kid, named Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), who's life changes when he meets Herman Blume (Bill Murray), a multi-millionaire who becomes friends with Max, and Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams), a teacher at his school, Rushmore. Murray and Schwartzman are excellent and Luke Wilson and Brian Cox have hilarious supporting roles.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow

I cant tell you how much this game blew me away. It is just so crisp, the graphics are so smooth... the gameplay is so fantastic. It's easily the best game I've played since Halo, hands down.

And that's just the single player campaign. Multiplayer makes the game so perfect. It's 2-on-2 "Spies" vs. "Mercenaries." The spies have a third-person view, and they depend on stealth to survive. They cannot kill the mercenaries, only knock them unconscious or stun them, so it is a lot harder for them. The mercenaries have a first-person view, and they have an assault rifle with a scope, so they can kill the spies. It ends up being very intense, nail-biting gaming.

BEST CD/DVD OF THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2004: Everywhere But Home by the Foo Fighters.

CD- The full track list of their concert in Reykjavik, Iceland. It's simply incredible. They really played their hearts out that concert... amazing.

DVD- Full track list of the show in Toronto, as well as acoustic segments from Washington, D.C. and Slane Castle. I'll tell ya, those Canucks were going frigging insane at the Toronto concert. Nothin like 8,000 Canadians screaming, jumping, and sweating, rocking away to the Foo Fighters... hell yeah. :D

Kill Bill, while great, isn't the best film of the first third of 2004. (It's a very, very, very, very close #2 however) The number 1 honor goes to...

ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND: Eternal Sunshine is one of the best movies made in recent years. It stars Jim Carrey as Joel, a man who has just ended a tumultuous relationship with Clementine (Kate Winslet). He soon finds out that Clementine has just went to a doctor (Tom Wilkinson) to get all memory of Joel erased. Attempting to get even, Joel then goes to the same doctor to have all of his memory of Clementine erased. During the memory erasing procedure, Joel begins to have second thoughts, and he attempts to hide deep inside his own mind with a Clementine composed of his memories. Meanwhile, the doctor's assistants, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, and Frodo--I mean Elijah Wood-- desperately try to go on with the procedure, but Joel tries too hard to fight it. The plot may be incredibly hard to swallow, but the writing and the direction is first rate. The real remarkable performance here is by Jim Carrey, who we all know from Dumb and Dumber, The Mash, Bruce Almighty etc.. Carrey completely disappears into the character of Joel. His performance is incredibly difficult and Carrey pulls it off perfectly. Kate Winslet is great as usual, same with Tom Wilkinson (In the Bedroom), Mark Ruffalo (You Can Count on Me), Elijah Wood and Kirsten Dunst. The screenplay is the brainchild of the messed-up mind behind Being John Malkovich, Charlie Kaufman, who also manages to write great dialogue as well as incredibly elaborate and mind bending plots. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind both bends your mind and moves you to tears. If it wasn't pitch perfect, it would've failed.
