chozen 1 Posted August 6, 2004 (edited) No. Saving Private Ryan was about American soldiers = much better than enemy at the gates. Edited August 6, 2004 by Old Green Turtle
Chickenman 9 Posted August 6, 2004 It has nothing to do with it being about Americans. They were both good movies, but Saving Pvt. Ryan was better.
chozen 1 Posted August 6, 2004 but enemy at the gate was so much cooler.
Ender 8 Posted August 6, 2004 Sniper 1 and 2 with Tom Berenger were pretty good, as far as the sniper duels/realism goes, there are a few Vietnam movies with good sniper action, and that's about it.

Chickenman 9 Posted August 13, 2004 Ender's Game-A+ Awesome book. I didn't like the ending, but it is still deserving of an A+. Basically, an alien race invaded and kicked our butts twice. We don't want to lose the next one, so we concentrate on breeding military geniuses. At Battle school, the smartest children on Earth train in a "game" that teaches battlefield tactics. The best and brightest of these young soldiers is named Ender Wiggin. The leader of the battle school sees that Ender Wiggin could be the commander that they need, and so Ender is forced to endure challenge after challenge, to teach him that in battle, he can never get outside help, and must survive on his own. But even if he can survive battle school, can he defeat the buggers? It's a great book with many great ideas. It is flawlessly written, and very fast paced. It's an absolutly amazing story. Now the bad stuff. I hated the ending. The Demosthenes and Locke story seemed kind of weird, but not in a way that ruined the book for me. I also was dismayed that we didn't get to actually see the war between Earth and the Buggers. I mean, it was in the book, but we didn't get to see it. Still, this book was amazing, and I highly reccomend it. Speaker for the Dead-A+ The sequel to Ender's Game. As I said about the last one, the ending sucked, but the ending actually set up this book, so I can see why it was made that way. This book is vastly diffrent than Ender's Game, though they are a sequel. It is 3,000 years after the "Xenocide" (destruction of the buggers at the hands of Ender) After the Xenocide, Ender became the "Speaker for the Dead" and founded his own religeon after it. The Speaker for the Dead tells the truth about a dead person's life, actually letting his mourners know him in the end. More on that in a second. 3,000 years after the Xenocide, another alien race has been found. When a scientist that studies them is killed by them, a Speaker for the Dead is called. His name is Andrew Wiggin. Andrew Wiggin is also the Ender Wiggin of the past. He has been kept young through the miracles of space travel. As he tries to unravel the mystery behind 3 deaths, he is also unraveling the mystery of the "piggies." Excellent book. As I said this one is vastly diffrent, where EG was about a war, SftD is about trying to unravel the mysery behind the piggies. I prefer Ender's Game simply because I'm a war buff, but this is close behind. Card comes up with charachters that you really care for and has made a unique mystery in the Piggies. I highly reccomend this one too. Band of Brothers-A+ In the second world war, E Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne, got the toughest assingments. From parachuting into Normandy on D-Day, to fighting in the ill fated operation market garden, to freezing to death in Bastogne, they were there. This story chronicles the stories of these heroes. This is possibly the best book I've ever read (then again, I havn't read too much, because though I'm always reading, I'm a slow reader) Stephen Ambrose takes you to these battlefields, and you can see it all. The stories are very well chronicled. After reading this book, the men of E Company were my heroes. Fallen Angels-A I didn't really notice Vietnam until this book. It just didn't interest me. Well, I picked up this book, and I can't wait for my next Vietnam book. It follows a squad through the hells of Vietnam. We see everything, friendly fire, the main charachter having to kill someone, someone right in front of him, face to face. We see a squadmate step on a landmine. The main charachter and his best friend spend a night in the jungle seperated from their squad. It's a pretty good book. The Hunt for Red October-A+ This was my first venture into the Tom Clancy universe and damn it, I'm staying. A russian sub goes missing. The Americans realized that the sub is defecting. Not only that, but it's a brand new, experimental sub. The Americans want the sub. The Russians want to destroy. And a race beneath the waves follows. Absolutly amazing. The book was very well thought out and very descriptive. The overall plot was great. The only problem is that it's so damn slow! Tom Clancy describes every single thing, which makes it so incredibly slow paced. This one took me about two months to finish. No lie. Of course, I wasn't reading it 24/7, but it still should have been done quicker than that. Patriot Games-A+ Taking place a couple years before the Hunt for Red October (3?) Jack Ryan doesn't work for the CIA yet. He is a proffesor at the Naval Academy at Annapolis. He is at a working vacation in London , when he hears gunshots. Thinking quickly, he breaks up an IRA assasanation plot against the Royal Family. Jack Ryan becomes a hero overnight. Now the IRA cell is after Jack Ryan. They try to kill him and his family. He joins the CIA to track the terrorists down. It will all end in a final shoot out between him, and the terroritsts. Not for honor. Not for country. For his wife and kids. Very good story. It has a great plot, great charachters, etc. Being Irish, I had no idea who to root for. I think the IRA has the right cause, but the wrong strategy. Luckily, this isn't a real cell, just a fictious ultra violent one. Aaanyway. The only complaint I have is the same for all the Clancy books. It's so slooooowww! Chickenman 9 Posted August 13, 2004 I only have 2 CDs at the moment. I will be getting more CDs in the future, but I might not be able to get the best ones, because I have no idea how what my parents (particularly my dad) think about rock. Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park: B+ A pretty good CD. It kind of gets old pretty quick though. This one is more hip-hop oriented than Meteora. The best tracks on the CD have to be Papercut, With You, Points of Authority, Place for my Head, and Forgotten, despite the fact that the lyrics to Place for my Head are kind of dumb, and Forgotten just doesn't make sense. At all. The rest get tired quickly. Once in awhile, they're okay to listen to, but they're not the kind of song you listen to over and over. And one track, Cure for the Itch, isn't really even a song. It's just DJ Joseph Hahn and his samples. That's still pretty cool, but I don't think it deserves a whole 2:37. However the tracks that I listed above make the CD, they let you tolerate all the others. The others arn't horrible, or even bad. But they're just not great. Meteora by Linkin Park: A+ Excellent CD. (Even though you can't really trust my judgement since I only have two. ) There is not a single track that I don't love. (Well, one, but I'll get to that.) This one is much more Rock oriented than Hybrid Theory. The best song on the CD, and indeed, the best song they sing, is Hit the Floor. Faint is a packed with energy, and Hit the Floor is an awesme blend of hip hop and heavy metal, (Not as heavy as some of the other stuff out there, but that's how they describe the song, so I'll humor them.) and they pull it off. The whole theme of Hybrid Theory was a fusion between hip hop and rock. Linkin Park accomplishes in this one song what Hybrid Theory needed a whole CD to accomplish. Session is the same thing as Cure for the Itch in Hybrid Theory, they both arn't really songs, as they have no lyrics, and the music has no pattern, however this one is much better than Cure for the Itch. Instead of Joseph Hahn and his DJing skillz, there is more of Rob Bourdon and his drums, though Joseph Hahn does come in at the end of it to help out with his samples. The only thing I don't like about Meteora is the first "track" I don't even think of it as a song, and when I copied the CD to my computer's media library, I left it out. It is a needless 13 second track. You basically hear a hammer hitting something over and over again and then hear glass breaking. It's so short, you think it's part of the next track, Don't Stay. But even then, it's a small annoyance, and a simple press of the "skip" button ends your problems. In conclusion, I know that there are better CDs out there, and I long to listen to them, but I think this will be one of my favorites for a loooong time. Drake 53 Posted August 15, 2004 Saw that last night. Loved it. Pei Mei rocked my socks. KB2: A+ Alien vs. Predator: A Great effects. Awesome fight scenes. Story was a little weak but that was expected. Ending left for a potentially great sequal. My full critique is in the AVP thread.
Chickenman 9 Posted August 15, 2004 I, Robot: A It was a very enjoyable movie. Good special effects. Good story. Good acting. And the theartre was very clean too. Anyway. It was an enjoyable movie, but not spectacular I doubt I'll remember it in a few years. But it's enjoyability gives it an A.
