i know in africa the fighting is because of the boundries set by the colonial powers, they just placed boundries where they liked and tribes were devided?

It's all colonial. As far as I know, the tribes were relatively peaceful until a bunch of Europenas barged and and started hiring natives to wipe out their mates who'd been hired by another bunch of Europenans since it would be impolite for Europeans to actually wipe out Europeans. Dutch, English, French, Spanish... We all jumped in at the word 'Diamonds'. The British pulled out of South Africa once it became embarrasing though. We really weren't bery nice people then, and some of us still ren't nice people now. Look how patriotic I am. *sigh*

funny, that's been my personal philosophy of late (I go through about one a week). That and, indifference is my normal state of being, but is it normal?

It's just I'm indifferent to absolutely everything. School, my boyfriend, Star Wars... I go at everything with exactly the same atitude and leave with exactly the same attitude. I think I'd make the perfect jedi; extremes of emotion are not my thing. Though I'm probably not coordinated enough to weild a lightsaber.

Thinking last night: all these countries at war are quite happy to participate against each other in the olympics and all of those other multi-naitonal events, while stilling hurling bombs at each other. We need more sports events!

Yeah. Did you know that on Christmas Day of the first year of WW1, all the German and Allied troops stopped fighting and had a big party. Cool huh. In the years after, however, the war had become too serious.

It's depressing, they arranged to end WW1 11/11 at 11AM several days earlier, but kept fighting until that time.

War breaks my heart. I'm not joining the military anymore for that reason.

War breaks quite a lot of hearts. That's the real tragedy of it, the individual stories...

That's why Operation Enduring Freedom is so hard for me. I look at these trainees walking past me every day and know that once they get sent, they're not coming home...

You're focusing on the negative. Most of them probably are coming home.

If I ever joined the army or anything like that, it would just be an office job, 'coz I could never go out and kill someone.

I can't even hit someone unless they hurt me first.

A lot of my friend's friends want to join the army, and she keeps pointing out to them rightly so IMO), that they're just being paid to kill. Soldiers are government paid BOunty Hunters, to coin the SW phrase.

Not just that. Soldiers help people and keep peace in places like Yugoslavia. They're only trained to kill in the event of war.

At any one time there is always at least one war on. And we always seem have have at least one regiment there. Have you ever read Jingo by Terry Pratchett? There's a commander of a regiment that's been pacify the borders, and he wonders why peace seems to involve so much slaughter. Lets face it, you train a bunch of people for war, peace-keeping isn't the best of tasks to set them to. Their reactions to cetain situations will have been changed. There's the example oif the man who was driving his wife to hospital while she was in labour in one of the current war zone, and they reached a road block, so he slammed the car into reverse, and the soldiers opened fire. They'd been trained to respond to that sort of thing as highly suspicious.

Yeah I did a research paper on that. Can you blame them? Think about all the scenes and everything they witnessed.

No, I can't blame them. Though I can blame the ones who went nuts and slaughtered the rest of their platoon. Watch apocalypse now.
