Andy 60 Posted April 8, 2006 lol... Yeah, just ignore those... lunatics. Hehe. Welcome to Galactic Basic! I actually just posted that in your game thread in the other forum but I hadn't ralised then that you had a welcome thread in here, lol. Hope you enjoy your stay here. I wouldn't worry too much about your English - if there is one thing I have noticed over the years, it's that any Frenchman who says they can speak a little English can speak more English than an Englishman can speak French. :)

Now, it's probably easier to read that in English, knowing me... Should say: "I am not that bad at French! (But I probably am) In which area of France do you live? I have been to Britanny and the Vendee several years ago. Stop me if I am making an idiot of myself, please. I have not used a lot of French since I left school about 5 years ago, so I am probably crap. What do you think? does it prove my point about English people not speaking French very well? lol

What do you think? does it prove my point about English people not speaking French very well? lol *chuckles* it's ok. while we were in paris a few weeks ago, i couldn't for the life of me figure out why walter and his parents kept sending me to ask people questions. i'd finally had enough and asked him why I had to do all the asking. Him in his genius state??? "You're the one that speaks French!" I DO NOT!!!!! I know how to say please and thank you! So what was I REALLY doing? Asking if they spoke German. GoodBeans 0 Posted April 12, 2006 Sure, your french is quite good Sorry I didn't see you answered me. So Kisa : "you're welcome" is "tu es le bienvenu". I live in Montpellier, it's spring here, I've waited it for a long time :)
Radioactive Isotope 29 Posted April 12, 2006 now is that welcome as in "Welcome to my house" or as in "thanks" "you're welcome"?
GoodBeans 0 Posted April 14, 2006 (edited) It's "you're welcome" (in my house or anywhere as in your example). For the reply to thank you, you could say "De rien" (means it's nothing), or better, "je t'en prie". There's no way of answering exactly the same than in english, but sure you could say "tu es le bienvenu" (or "la bienvenue" if it's a women) to answer to someone who thanked you. If think any french would understand. ; and I find the idea better than "de rien" or "je t'en prie"... You're welcome is far better I think, but it's not unusual to have better words or expressions in english than in french (but don't say that to a french guy ), did you know we don't even have a word to really translate "smooth", we have to say 3 or 4 words to explain the idea... Edited April 14, 2006 by GoodBeans

Most languages are the same actually. It depends on the culture of the country. See this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4248494.stm :D
