Oh bullsith, Unknown. More than 80% of the soldiers of the Confederacy didn't give a damn about secession or slaves. They fought against the Union because they were invading their homes. The Union committed many more atrocities (i.e. burning towns, farms, etc.) than the Confederates did. Yes, say Andersonville all you want, but that was one thing. The Union had POW camps twice as large as Andersonville, and just as terrible. They dont get the attention because Andersonville was run by the "bad guys."

And it doesn;t matter about personal beliefs. The confederate soldiers CHOSE to fight for the Confederacy whose ideals became their own. They had a choice about what to do, and they chose to join the confederacy instead of maybe creating their own little army to protect their town.
