TheUnknown 39 Posted November 6, 2004 (edited) As the title states, this thread is for discussing the coming elections in 2008, including potential candidates, political stategies, and the results themselves in four years. So, with Bush being a two-term president *stifles urge to vomit uncontrollably*, and therefore term-limited, we will have an open seat in 2008 (in other words, a third hotly contested race). Both parties are without obvious successors. So, here is my list of possible candidates: Democratic Party Hillary Rodham Clinton - Senator from New York; Former First Lady Barack Obama - Senator-elect from Illionois; Only Black Senator John Edwards - 2004 Vice-Presidential Nominee; Outgoing Senator from North Carolina John Kerry - 2004 Presidential Nominee; Senator from Massachusettes Howard Dean - 2004 Presidential Candidate; Former Governor of Vermont Harry Reid - Incoming Senate Minority Leader; Senator from Nevada Kathleen Sebelius - Governor of Kansas Brad Henry - Governor of Oklahoma Rod Blagojevich - Governor of Illinois; Former Member of the House of Representatives from Illinois Evan Bayh - Senator from Indiana; Former Governor of Indiana Bill Richardson - Governor of New Mexico; Former Secretary of Energy; Former UN Ambassador; Former Member of the House of Representatives from New Mexico Wesley Clark - Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander; Retired General Ed Rendell - Governor of Pennsylvania, Former Mayor of Philadelphia Republican Party Bill Frist - Senate Majority Leader; Senator from Tennessee Rudolph Guiliani - Former Mayor of New York City Jeb Bush - Governor of Florida John McCain - Senator from Arizona Bob Taft - Governor or Ohio George Pataki - Governor of New York Colin Powell - Secretary of State; Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Retired General Christine Tood Whitman - Former EPA Director; Former Governor of New Jersey Mitt Romney - Governor Massachusettes; Former Head of the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee Chuck Hagel - Senator from Nebraska This is not meant to be a prediction or comprehensive. Princess 35 Posted November 6, 2004 (edited) Jennifer Granholm - Governor of Michigan Only if they change the Constitution. She's Canadian Edited September 2, 2008 by Andy
Mickey 1 Posted November 6, 2004 I hope the dems run hilary clinton. I don't think think she'd get voted in, so the repubs would walk away with that one. Plus she's rude, she walked right into me on the street and didn't even say sorry.
Tsl 7 Posted November 7, 2004 He somehow recognized you were from his district...with his super-human-politician powers of DOOM! Anyhow, saw a funny thing on a morning news program on PBS. Seems a few thousand Americans are literally, no kidding, fleeing to Canada because of Bush's reelection. They interviewed one of them who was a Dr. somethingrather, professor of history at somethingrather university who feared his family would lose their civil rights. Teh goofs.
Drake 53 Posted November 7, 2004 They're probably right about losing their civil rights.
Drake 53 Posted November 7, 2004 (edited) That next day, I held the door for Portman, and he smiled and said thanks. He could smell your neo-conservativeness. ;) Edited September 2, 2008 by Andy
TheUnknown 39 Posted November 7, 2004 (edited) Unknown, it's also possible that Rob Portman, the Congressman from my district of Ohio will run for the Republicans, which would be sweet. <!--QuoteEEnd--> So, that's why I couldn't find that guy. I was looking under the Maryland page. Anyways, Portman may have trouble with name recognition. Also, House members have a very poor track record of becoming President or even getting the nomination. Senators also have a poor track record. Governors fair much, much better (ie. FDR, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, GW Bush were all Governors before being elected. Others may have been too.) Jennifer Granholm - Governor of Michigan Only if they change the Constitution. She's Canadian She is? Born in Canada or residing in Canada? And there may be some wiggle room depending on the status of her paretns at the time. If not, scratch that. Unless they do amend the Constitution and we have an Austrian versus a Canadian. Edit: She was born in Vancouver. Nevermind. I should also point out that Jeb Bush and Guiliani have said they are not running, but Schwartzeneggar said the same thing. I am also adding some names to my lists. Edited September 2, 2008 by Andy
Princess 35 Posted November 7, 2004 (edited) Besides Unknown, we need her to keep cleaning up the mess that Engler left when he ran up against his term limit. Michigan hasn't been very pretty. Some colleges have taken 27% tuition increases in one year. Edited November 7, 2004 by Prin: MSU hockey roxx0rs
Drake 53 Posted November 7, 2004 I'd like to see a Canadian President. It would be better for both countries because someone down there would actually pay attention to us up here.

GI_Admiral 2 Posted November 15, 2004 I dunno Hillary and obama if they announce a running will have a good chance but will probably not win. Cause their gender and race. Many of this depends on what the people do within the next few years. kerry doesnt have too good of a chance.
Roethlisberger 0 Posted November 15, 2004 I'm voting for McCain. I'm a Democrat, but I think McCain would be the best president.
TheUnknown 39 Posted November 15, 2004 Well, we heard today that Cheney is NOT running in 2008. In addition, we've gotten "no"s from Guiliani and Jeb Bush. It's difficult to say what chances McCain would have getting the Republican nomination. The Republican Party has moved to the right a lot. McCain may find himself out of the mainstream of his party. Then again, they may move so far that they end up losing moderate Republicans (ie. Chafee, Snowe, Collins, Specter) to defections and lose seats in states that voted for Kerry (ie. Pennsylvania, Rhode Island) or barely from Bush (Colorado, Ohio, Iowa). Obama may be too unexperienced to get it. He'll only have been in the Senate for two or three years when the primaries heat up. Clinton has all of Bill's problems (ie. polarization, negative name recognition, etc) and few of his strengths (ie. charisma, executive experience, etc.). She's up for re-election this year. If she has any trouble in liberal New York, she's gone. However, I still expect we'll have a woman President before a black President.

Ender 8 Posted November 15, 2004 Beeurd, this is all U.S. press. After months and months of spazzing over the election, they've got to do some spazzing about the next election before something big breaks in the news.
TheUnknown 39 Posted November 18, 2004 I'm voting for McCain. I'm a Democrat, but I think McCain would be the best president. Truth be told, if it comes down to John McCain for the Republicans and Joe Lieberman or Evan Bayh for the Democrats, I, yes the liberal socialist who supports gay marriage and total separation of church and state, will be a swing voter. GI_Admiral 2 Posted November 18, 2004 If McCain ran, I too would probably become a swing voter and maybe vote republican *gasp*
