GI_Admiral 2 Posted May 25, 2005 It'll be vetoed, was only passed so senators can say that "I voted for/against this!"
Drake 53 Posted May 25, 2005 Hold on a second...the President can veto any bill he wants? That's just rediculous! The representatives of the people have decided that this bill should be passed. The President has no right in axing it because of his own bias.
Andy 60 Posted May 25, 2005 Unless we just misunderstood that, the US isn't a good democracy after all.
Drake 53 Posted May 25, 2005 Yeah, totally. How can the people's voices be heard if the leader does what he wants? It doesn't seem fair to me.
Ayingel 24 Posted May 25, 2005 that's the problem with america. we came to be free, but if we're free, why don't our votes count more? when you think about it, the elections here don't do anything but try to influence the senators voting at the same time. Drake 53 Posted May 25, 2005 The only democratic thing you do is vote in a new dictator every 4 years.

Tsl 7 Posted May 25, 2005 (edited) Hold on a second...the President can veto any bill he wants? That's just rediculous! The representatives of the people have decided that this bill should be passed. The President has no right in axing it because of his own bias. But I think it goes back to congress after a veto and it can still be voted into law. ah, found it from the Senate's website "override of a veto - The process by which each chamber of Congress votes on a bill vetoed by the President. To pass a bill over the President's objections requires a two-thirds vote in each Chamber. Historically, Congress has overridden fewer than ten percent of all presidential vetoes." Drake 53 Posted May 25, 2005 Yeah. Less than 10%. That means the President gets his way over 90% of the time. :p
Andy 60 Posted May 25, 2005 I wonder if there is actually a perfect goverment system yet to be discovered. lol
Andy 60 Posted May 25, 2005 I thought this was rather appropriate: "Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." - Winston Churchill

TheUnknown 39 Posted May 26, 2005 Yes, the President can veto any bill he wants to, but that veto can be overridden by a two-thirds vote in both houses of Congress. The Stem Cell Bill passed with 238 votes, if my math is right, they would need 290 votes. The Senate would need 67 votes to override a veto and 61 to invoke cloture. I saw a press conference where the bill's Senate proponents said they think they can override it. And I think it's a good thing that the President has this power. Our system of government seperates powers and gives each branch checks over the others. It may bog things down, but it makes it where should one branch become corrupted, the others can step in on the people's behalf.
Andy 60 Posted May 26, 2005 What if the President were corrupt? (I'm not saying he is, btw. lol)
TheUnknown 39 Posted May 26, 2005 The President IS corrupt. If the President becomes corrupted: (1) Congress can refuse to pass legislation that he wants, including appointments. (2) Congress can override his vetoes with a 2/3 vote in each House. (3) Congress can impeach him (with a majority vote in the House) and remove him from office (with a 2/3 vote in the Senate). (4) Congress can impeach and remove cabinet and subcabinent members. (5) The courts can rule his or his Administration's actions illegal or unconstitutional. SoftballJedi 0 Posted May 30, 2005 (edited) I thought he was already filming a new movie, and had a couple more parts planned out for him already? I actually thought he was a good actor, but if he does become an architect, good for him, but it'll be dissapointing for me not to see him being so hot in movies anymore. And not to see him act. Ana 15 Posted May 31, 2005 If he wants to go architect, that's cool by me. But I'm pissed he dissed Orli in the process. Just 'cause the guy accepts his eye-candyness doesn't give Hayden license to diss him. He's just jealous 'cause Orli has a larger fanbase. :p
