Day Two: Revelations

[Rogue 4]

Jean nodded, looking over to the newcomer, she walked over and took a seat at the table, turning it so that she could face him better. "Calvin, right?" The redhead asked, extending a hand. "I'm Jean Grey. Peter's told me a little about you."

[Andy 60]

Calvin left his conversation with Chase and turned to face Jean. "Yeah, that's right. I guess you're in charge around here, huh?"

[Rogue 4]

"More or less." Jean told him. "Along with Scott Summers. And Peter over there is our head of security. He said that you didn't have any belongings with you, so I took the liberty of picking some up for you." She extended a hand, levitating the bags from the counter over to him. "I wasn't sure how you normally dressed, so I hope those will be okay for now. I tried to judge based on what Scott wears."

"Oh, thanks," Calvin smiled. He hadn't been expecting that. "I'm sure they'll be fine... I suppose you've got a few questions for me, then?"

[Rogue 4]

Jean smiled. "Just a few. If you won't mind walking with me we can get them out of the way."

She rose and placed a hand lightly on his shoulder, leading him towards one of the small sitting rooms that overlooked the back garden, and most of the estate. "Here, make yourself comfortable." She said, taking a seat. "So Calvin, why don't you tell me about yourself. Who are you, and what brought you here to the Institute?"

Calvin followed Jean and took a seat, his confidence fizzled when she started asking questions. "Uh, I just need somewhere to stay. I met this guy at the beach, he said he was from some government thing, and he told me it was safe here. I can't go back home. Partly because it isn't really home....and partly because I think I accidentally burnt it down in my sleep..."

Wondering who had told him about the Institute, Jean considered probing the boy's mind. Still, she knew that this boy was fragile right now, and didn't have control of his abilities. She didn't want to do anything to frighten him, or make him uncomfortable. "It's perfectly normal for someone who's just discovering their abilities to have difficulty controlling them. We've all been there, believe me. Over time, with practice, and guidance you'll be able to master your ability. I know that sometimes it seems like our abilities are really a curse, but if you stay here I guarantee that you'll learn to see them as a gift."

"The person on the beach was right. You are safe here, for as long as you want to stay here. We'll help you learn to control you're abilities Calvin, so that you won't have to worry anymore about them controlling you."

Sam drove up the long driveway to the entrance of the Xavier Mansion. Once parked, he grabbed his SHIELD credentials and got out of the car. After making his way up the front steps, Sam rang the doorbell and waited.

Hailey had just finished making the salad for dinner when she heard the doorbell rang. Peter was busy making the chicken, potatoes and veggies so she said, "I'll get it!" Hailey left the kitchen and made her way out to the front lobby. She spotted Kurt and Scott in the den, working on trying to fix Kurt's holo-inducer. No doubt, they were wishing someone like Beast or Forge were there to help out.

She went down the step in the lobby and up to the door. Hailey opened it, finding a man in a suit and sunglasses. "Can I help you?" she asked.

"Absolutely, you can," the man replied with a smile. "Might Professor Grey or Summers be in?"

Hailey tilted her head to the side. "Might be. Who are you again?"

The man removed his badge and opened it so that she could see. Inside was an insignia that Hailey was all too familiar with. "Agent Samaru Kashiro. SHIELD."

With a sigh, Hailey stepped aside to let the agent in. "Wait here and don't touch anything. I'll go find someone."

The SHIELD agent smiled again. "Thank you, Miss Hudson."

Hailey paused on her way up the steps. Of course he knew her name. He probably knew most of the people in here already. She continued up and went into the den. "Scott. There's someone at the door. He says he's an agent from SHIELD. I figured you'd want to blast him or something."

Calvin smiled. "I'd like to stay here....I mean, well, I haven't really got any other place to go. If I go back I'm sure I'll just be rehoused with another set of foster parents. And it's been hard enough thinking of yourself as human when you are being passed around like 'flu, never mind finding out you have a secret ability you can't go around telling everyone about....so yeah, it'd be great if I could stay here."

Checking the time on his watch, Joseph took leave of his friends and picked up his backpack. He needed to hurry in order to catch the next bus to take him home. If he missed it, he'd be late for dinner. He shucked off his flip-flops, took them in hand and ran down the road and around a corner, towards the bus stop.

Sean took his wagon towards downtown, and after a few more turns, pulled into the driveway of a small but decent apartment complex. He parked, grabbed his briefcase and left his car, going towards one of the doors of the nearest building. His place was a garden apartment in the southeast corner, opposite the lot and away from most of the noise.

Sketching out another figure, August realized she was getting hungry. Now she had to decide where to eat. Originally she had planned to go to this little cafe she knew of five minutes from the beach, but now she didn't really feel like driving. So she packed up her stuff and folded up her blanket, taking her things with her as she made her way through the sand towards the Cove.

"Thanks Hailey, I'll be back later to help you out with this Kurt." He said, turning towards the door. Scott walked slowly to the lobby thinking. SHIELD?? I wonder what this is all about. He entered the lobby, finding a tan man with black hair in a suit looking around. "Hello, I'm Professor Scott Summers. I hear you're an agent from SHIELD. What can I help you with agent..um... I'm sorry I didn't get your name." Scott said holding out a hand.

Sam took the hand in his and shook it. "Samaru Kashiro. But please, call me Sam. And Miss Hudson was correct. I'm the SHIELD agent assigned to this area. The sudden emergance of young mutants in this part of the country facilitated the need for a more permanent presence." He smiled and added, "I'm guessing that's why Xavier sent you folks as well."

Kelly nodded. "I'm sure you'll find lots of cool stuff to do with it all. And think of it this way - you can use it to help people, yanno? Say there's a fire, as bad as that'd be, and everyone thinks that the house is clear. You hear someone yelling for help; I mean, come on, you might have just saved their life. In a way no one else could. Or if you weren't the one attacked by a shark - someone else was. You might be able to hear them yelling, even if they're far away from other people."

Lance finally let Natalie go. "See? Looks like there are upsides to this gift."

He entered his dark apartment and locked the door behind him. Stretching briefly, he headed into his small kitchen to make a pot of iced tea.

August found an empty table in the Cove, which wasn't too hard, and sat down at it. She fingered through the limited menu, trying to decide.

"Well, make yourself at home then." She realized that there was a visitor on the estate, and decided that it was time to wrap this conversation up for now. She realized Scott was taking care of it, but she figured she should check it out just in case. "Dinner should be just about ready, so I'll meet you downstairs soon. Peter will fill you in on all of the house rules."

And with that she excused herself, heading downstairs to see what was going on.

Natalie looked up to her friends, not entirely convinced, but seemingly better. "I suppose so."

Sam looked up and saw Jean at the top of the stairs. "Ah, Professor Grey. I'm Sam Kash, agent for SHIELD. Director Fury sent me to monitor mutant activity in this area personally. I just wanted to stop by and let you know that I would be around. In fact, I've already directed a couple of kids your way. Hope you don't mind."

The manager at the Cove came over after a few moments. "Can I get you something to eat, miss?"

Jean walked down the stairs until she arrived at Scott's side and extended a hand towards the SHIELD Agent."Not at all. This place is a safehaven for all mutants, and we have more than enough room for them. I'm guessing then that you're the one who sent Calvin James in our direction."

[Drake 53]

"The pyro kid? Yeah, I ran into him just an hour ago. Man, you guys are fast." Sam laughed a little. "Yeah, so I talked to a couple others. One was a metamorph that could shift into animals. The other was just beginning to realize her abilities. She has advanced audio reception that may already include mental sonar mapping. I told them about you guys however I think the Brotherhood may have already gotten to them first."

"The Brotherhood?!" Scott exclaimed "I didn't know that they were in town. We may work fast, but I just hope it was fast enough. All we need is for the Brotherhood to start trouble here and turn more of us to the bad side." He turned to Sam. "Do you have any idea how many strong they are? I mean which of them are in town?"

Scott feared that the Brotherhood was here for the same reason as they were. If they gained too many members, nothing would stop them from creating chaos all over the town. "We have to make sure these kids come to us first. If they dont it could be terrible."

"Fusion is here," said Sam. "I tracked the metamorph boy to their lair. Found Mr. Travis waiting there. I also ran into another that you know all too well. I crossed paths with Mystique on Monday. I almost had her detained but she got away."

[Rogue 4]

Jean looked over at Scott in surprise. "We saw Fusion down near the beach on Monday, but we didn't think the whole Brotherhood was moving in, especially not Mystique. I'll have to check Cerebro later to see if there are any other mutants around that we know of."

Lila sat in her room looking at all her new clothes. Wow...I haven't had this much new clothing since... She shook her head. This is a fresh start. She picked up one of the skirts she bought and laid it on the bed. "You, shall be worn tomorrow." Lila heard a beep and looked over to where her cellphone was sitting. "Must be done charging." She picked up the phone and opened the keyboard. She had already synched it to her computer, so Lila was just taking some time to explore its features. Her stomach grumbled and Lila knew that it was time to eat soon, so she started making her way down to the kitchen.

"You do that," said Sam. He took out another of the cards that he had given Natalie and Calvin then wrote his number on the back before handing it to Jean. "If you need anything, give me a call." He opened the door to make his leave. "Enjoy your dinner." Sam walked back to his Impala and drove away.

Meanwhile, Peter and Hailey had set out dinner and started serving the guests first, despite Kurt's complaints. Lila wandered in followed by Scott and Jean and everyone dug in.
