I read the prequel 4-issue comic series, Star Trek: Countdown, that ran prior to the release of the movie. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about what exactly happened to Spock and Nero before they were pulled back in time.

In the comic, Nero's original mining vessel was retrofitted with a top-secret Romulan weapon's platform (after the destruction of Romulus) that was retrofitted Borg technology combined with Romulan designs. It had superior warp, cloaking and sensors plus it could adapt, learn and self-repair. That's why it looked different from the standard Romulan ships.

I read a little back ground on it, and that, coupled with the movie, makes the ST universe all the more interesting. And now we have no IDEA what we get to look forward to! :D

Indeed. The destruction of the USS Kelvin created a ripple effect in the timeline. All of those people who would have lived and everything that ship would have done afterward no longer exist. Then, of course, Vulcan is destroyed as are all of the ships and cadets that went to answer the distress call. The Klingon armada that was wiped out by Nero, as well. Everything those people would have done will no longer happen.

The almost 20 years between the end of the new, alternate Star Trek and the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture will be so different that everything that happens will be so completely changed that it won't be a remake at all. However, events such as the coming of V'Ger (ST I) or the Probe (ST IV) are nearly impossible to alter since they are vastly more powerful than anything that could stop them.

That brings up another point, though. Old Spock appears to lack any qualms about altering the timeline as it has already been significantly FUBAR. He has already shared Scotty's equation for transwarp beaming. It seems more than likely that he will reveal further advances in technology as well as all of the more static events that will transpire in the coming years. Like, he can let the Federation know that in 30 years, an alien probe will come to Earth looking for humpback whales and, oh yeah, we'll have to go back in time to get them because they're all extinct now.

Totally true. I think the problem they're going to run into now, is making sure that they DON'T do anything that would happen like the original timeline (other than the major events that would happen any way).

I for one am really looking forward to what's going to happen. I mean, I can't even begin to speculate. :D

Thanks to the discussion on the Geekshow Podcast, I'm a bit intrigued that in this new Trek timeline, the Federation and the Klingons might end up not being enemies.

Instead, the Romulans would be the new bad guys.

An interesting thought. Especially when it really does look like the Romulans made some sort of deal with the Borg, to build that ship in the movie.

Well, it doesn't necessarily mean that they made a deal with the Borg to get the technology.

You have to remember, that before Romulus was destroyed, at that point in time, technology had advanced to the point where the Borg weren't the threat they once were. All the major powers in the universe pretty much had access to that kind of technology.

And I would have to agree that with Spock changing the course of history by giving Scotty his equation years in advance, we can assume that the Federation in general is going to advance technologically a lot faster than in the original time line. And with them encountering the advanced Romulan and Vulcan ships in the movie, well, come on, you know they got scans of the ships. There will be engineers in Starfleet pouring over that data for years, backwards engineering the tech, and making things a LOT more interesting.

This also means that many threats encountered in the original time line, won't be threats any more, due to events unfolding the way they did.

I think now, a Borg encounter wouldn't be as cool as we think. And it's already been done. Something new has to happen. Or something that we've seen with a twist that we would never expect.

I just don't care anymore. If people haven't seen the movie yet, they shouldn't be in here.

Also, the Borg were seriously crippled at the end of Voyager to the point that it would take a long time to recover. It wouldn't surprise me if Borg ships around the galaxy just suddenly shut down after the Queen and the Hub were destroyed. Easy pickings for the likes of the Romulans.

Regardless, all the Borg in the past would have to do is assimilate one ship. Granted, the first encounter between the Borg and the Federation was in TNG when Q flung the Enterprise-D into the Delta Quadrant.
