Disney have announced that it's toys-to-life game platform Disney Infinity will be retired this year. The move is somewhat shocking given the platform's popularity with collectors and it's potential for expansion, with several projects being canned as a result. Disney Infinity 3.0 introduced Star Wars to the family of characters already available, and developers were reportedly working on content to be introduced alongside upcoming spin-off movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as well as new 12-inch premium figures that would have extra in-game features as well as new physical attributes such as built-in lighting. The toys-to-life market has been growing crowded recently, with Activision's Skylander's remaining popular and relative newcomer Lego Dimensions also filling up toy store shelves. The last figures to be released for the system will be three characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass and a Finding Dory playset coming in June 2016, so sadly there will be no new Star Wars additions to come.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition will add Star Wars favourites to the Infinity line-up, alongside Disney, Marvel, and Pixar characters that have already joined the video game series, with James Pitario, president of Disney Interactive saying the team have, "worked closely with Lucasfilm to deliver an authentic Star Wars game experience, featuring some of the most iconic stories and characters from the past, present and future." Star Wars will debut on the platform with three playsets, one based on the prequel trilogy timeline, one based on the classic trilogy timeline, and the third to be released later this year based on The Force Awakens. The announcement came shortly after leaked images appeared to show Star Wars characters alongside the familiar Disney Infinity branded packaging, and an official trailer has since been released: Disney Infinity 3.0 is being developed for PlayStation4, PlayStation3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC, iOS and Android.

Despite recently announcing lay-offs from Disney Interactive Studios, Disney is reportedly pushing ahead with plans to release Disney Infinity toys for both the Star Wars and Marvel franchises. For those who have not played Disney Infinity, the game requires an "infinity base" connected to your console, on to which you place collectible toys and power "discs" that tell the game what to do, and drops your chosen character in an open world of missions to complete how you want. There are already a multitude of sets to chose from, including Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, Nightmare Before Christmas, and many more. Infinity received mostly positive praise from critics, and has sold more than three million starter packs since it was released last year. The addition of Star Wars and Marvel will undoubtedly provide a hefty sales boost to an already popular product.
