Before Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, it was announced that the director was already working on a new Star Wars trilogy of his own, that would be set apart from The Skywalker Saga, much like Rogue One. However, after the mixed reaction to his stab at the main series, and the subsequent lackluster box office performance of Solo, things went quiet on the anthology film front. Recently, Johnson was caught on the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival, and was asked about his Star Wars project: We’ll see. I am still talking to Lucasfilm and they are figuring out what they are doing. We’ll see what happens. I’ll be thrilled if it happens. Rian Johnson This has cast further doubt on the fate of his trilogy, which was expected to pick up on a few of the seeds sown in The Last Jedi. In May 2019 several Star Wars film release dates were confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger, with the next spin-off film being pencilled in for 16 December 2022 and confirmed to be the David Benioff & DB Weiss project which is heavily rumoured to be set in the Old Republic era. Lucasfilm and Disney have yet to make any official statement about the status of Johnson's future in the Star Wars franchise, nor have they confirmed any details for the Star Wars movies set for release in 2024 and 2026.

Tim Rose who played Admiral Ackbar in Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi has expressed his disappointment with the way his character was killed off in The Last Jedi. Rose was also disappointed that Ackbar, a fan favourite character by any standard, was not given a larger role in the sequel trilogy and was essentially used as a joke at the end of filming. Ackbar's final moment before he went in to the box was a big joke about 'It's a wrap'. They just thought 'Wouldn’t it be funny?' And that was the sum total of my life as Ackbar. Tim Rose Here's the full interview with YouTuber Jamie Stangroom (whose channel is well worth a subscribe, by the way):

Disney have revealed a schedule which pinpoints the movie release dates across their vast empire of brands, including Star Wars. Three Star Wars movies have been assigned release dates, but no further information accompanies the untitled movies. The movies are set for release in 2022, 2024, and 2026, which is a distinctive enough pattern that it isn't too much of a stretch to speculate that these are the Rian Johnson Star Wars trilogy that was announced back in 2017. See also: Star Wars Movie Release Schedule Rian Johnson's last foray into Star Wars was the divisive second episode of the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it is widely expected that his trilogy will pick up on some of the unresolved threads from that film. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will release this December, leaving us with a three-year gap before the next Star Wars film hits the big screen.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has officially hit theatres around the world, and the critics reviews have been overwhelmingly positive about Rian Johnson's new direction for the Star Wars saga. Rotten Tomatoes currently has a critics score of 93% - certified fresh - but the general public has been much more divided, with only 56% being satisfied by The Last Jedi. Metacritic is currently scoring The Last Jedi with a very positive 86. Empire gave The Last Jedi four stars, saying that the film "delivers everything you want from a Star Wars movie" and comments on the surprising ways it delivers thrills and feels. Rolling Stone branded it "The Empire Strikes Back for the next generation". Their 3.5 star review commented on the crowded plot, but applauded the performances of Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher. "There are fan-pleasing moments, for sure, but nothing is included without a purpose", said IGN as they awarded a 9.7/10 rating. They also pointed out that too many subplots weighed the film down in the middle but called it "quintessentially Star Wars". What did you think? The first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was screened to convention goers at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando on 14 April 2017. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is the only only character with dialogue in the trailer, which also shows scenes of Rey practicing her lightsaber moves. Although the trailer does not reveal much, Luke's words hint that he no longer believes that the Jedi should be the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. Captain Phasma was also shown, presumably meting out some Empire Strikes Back style retribution. Kylo Renn appears to have dumped his helmet as we see it shattered on the floor, although the trailer alludes to him still being a major villain for the film. General Leia Organa is also seen, confirming previous speculation that she would play a pivotal role in the film, guiding the Resistance forces. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is scheduled for release on 15 December 2017.
